Flower Care

Receiving Farm-Direct Flowers

At Laflora, we pride ourselves on delivering farm-direct flowers fresh from our partner farms. Receiving flowers directly from the source is a unique experience compared to purchasing from a grocery store or florist. When your flowers arrive, you may notice that extra leaves, thorns, guard petals, and anthers might be removed, depending on the variety. To ensure the highest quality and extend the vase life of your blooms, it’s important to follow the care and preparation steps outlined below. While most flowers share similar care needs, some varieties may require special attention. If you don’t find your flower type listed, please refer to our General Flower Care section.

General Flower Care

Step 1: Receive

Prepare clean containers with at least 4 inches of fresh, cool water. If you have flower food, mix it into the water; if not, it’s available on our site. Open your boxes carefully, inspect your flowers, and remove them by cutting any straps. Take off any floral packaging from the stems and bunches.

Step 2: Process

Remove any foliage that falls below the waterline of your vase. Be gentle to avoid damaging the stems. Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut the stems diagonally about one inch from the bottom edge. Immediately place the cut stems in the prepared water.

Step 3: Maintain

Allow your flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate properly. Most flowers require 8 to 12 hours for optimal hydration. Store them in a cool, dark location, away from direct sunlight, drafts, or excessive heat. Change the water every 24 hours and re-cut the stems every 24 to 48 hours to keep your flowers fresh. Be sure that your flowers have plenty of water, as they will drink a substantial amount upon arrival.

Storing Your Flowers

Hydration is key for your flowers’ longevity. Remember that warm environments (such as outdoors, hot rooms, or direct sunlight) can help your flowers bloom, while cooler environments will slow down the blooming process. Most flowers should be stored in a cool, dark place unless you’re trying to encourage faster blooming. Always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Additionally, keep your flowers away from fruits, vegetables, and other plants that emit ethylene gas, as this can lead to wilting.

Note: Specific flower types may require special care.
